Meet The Coaches

Dave Rorem

With nearly 50 years of experience, Dave's journey into retriever training began in his childhood in West Central Minnesota. Starting with gun dogs, he stumbled upon his passion for the Retriever Field Trial sport in 1975, a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong dedication.

Throughout his early years, Dave honed his skills by training with various professional and amateur mentors. The turning point came during his extensive 12-year collaboration with Rex Carr, where Dave not only trained dogs but also received advanced education in the field.

Since 1977, Dave, along with his wife Paulette and their daughter Ty, has been at the helm of Rorem Retrievers, operating in both Minnesota and Texas. Specializing in field trial dogs, their efforts have yielded impressive results, boasting a portfolio of over 80 Field Champions, 1 National Open Champion, 4 Canadian National Open Champions, 3 Canadian National Amateur Champions, and over 60 National Finalists. Dave's legacy in the world of retriever training is marked by his unwavering commitment and a trail of successful dogs that have left their mark in the field.

Ty Rorem

Ty Rorem was raised in a family of professional dog trainers and started throwing birds as soon as she could walk. After graduating college, she joined Rorem Retrievers in 2004 and has been a driving force in the kennel ever since. Today, Ty carries much of the load of competing in weekend field trials and national events.

Her accomplishments speak for themselves—she has made more than 25 Field Champions and reached the National finals eight times, including three finalists in 2020. Widely respected across the retriever field trial community, Ty has earned high praise from some of the sport’s most legendary figures:

  • Rex Carr: “I have never seen anyone more in tune with dogs than Ty.”

  • Danny Farmer: “If you want to be a great handler, copy Ty Rorem.”

  • National Judge: “I’ve never judged a better handler than Ty Rorem!”

Ty’s combination of natural instinct, hard-earned skill, and relentless dedication continues to set the standard for excellence in retriever training and handling.

Pat Burns

Pat Burns’ journey began in 1984 at Handjem Kennels, where he trained alongside Mike Lardy. That early foundation shaped his career and set him on a path that has spanned decades of training, competing, and—most importantly—mentoring others.

In 1986, he co-founded Esprit Kennels, working with countless talented dogs and handlers. Then, in 2007, he returned to Handjem, continuing to refine his craft and help others do the same.

Over the years, Pat has contributed to the success of more than 100 Field Trial Champions and over 50 National Finalists, including five National Champions.

Beyond the titles, what drives him is helping trainers truly understand their dogs—and themselves. His career has been devoted to guiding handlers through the nuances of the game, showing that it’s never just about setups or mechanics. It’s about clarity, connection, and understanding what needs to happen—and why.

Pat credits two key mentors for shaping his philosophy: Rex Carr, who gave him his start and instilled in him a standard of excellence, and Mike Lardy, who demonstrated that great training is rooted in thoughtful problem-solving rather than simple repetition.
