Unlocking Success: The True Value of a Bombproof Basics Program

Hey there,

In this month’s Vblog, I want to delve into the most crucial aspect of dog training, Basics: “beginning with the end in mind”. This is why I created my Bombproof Basics course.

My vision for a well-trained dog is one that is responsive yet not overly reactive to corrections. This behavior is cultivated over time, starting from early obedience training and continuing throughout the dog's lifetime.

When administering a correction, my aim is to apply just enough pressure to modify behavior effectively, but not so much that it overwhelms the dog. Let me elaborate on this concept.

I want to ensure that any pressure I use serves to modify unwanted behaviors. There are two key elements to achieving this goal. Firstly, it's essential that your dog has a clear understanding of what is expected of them. Pressure should never be employed as a primary means of instruction; rather, it should be used to reinforce what the dog has already learned. Secondly, the amount of pressure applied should be sufficient to bring about the desired behavioral change and motivate the dog accordingly. This is what I mean when I say, “As much pressure as necessary and as little as possible”.

The ultimate objective of training is to rely less on correction and more on positive reinforcement. However, this transition can only occur when your dog willingly exhibits the desired behaviors. It's a rewarding milestone when you find yourself spending more time rewarding good behavior than always correcting bad behavior. This balance is achievable through the development of a healthy response to pressure.

For a more in-depth exploration of this topic, I've provided a video. I encourage you to take a few minutes to watch it and share your feedback.

Cheers,

Pat
