You can have a great plan and still watch it unravel.
The dog never truly locks onto the mark.
Your dog inches forward and puts you out of proper position.
Feedback comes a beat too late.
Delivery seems fine but quietly throws off the next retrieve.
And then there's what you're doing—where you're standing, how you're moving, the small shifts in your footwork that either set your dog up for success or slowly unravel the work.
It doesn't feel dramatic. But those small moments make staying on track harder.

That's what this session is about: The timing, rhythm, and choreography between you and your dog that shapes what happens next.
The Patterns Most Handlers Miss
✓ The setup window that determines whether your dog is truly focused or just waiting and the 3 specific behaviors that tell you which one you're seeing
✓ Why timing creates clarity - How delivering feedback 2 seconds earlier or later changes what your dog learns (most handlers are consistently off by 3-5 seconds without realizing it).
✓ The real bird watching test - The difference between a dog staring at a mark and a dog locked in (there are 4 visual cues most handlers miss).
✓ Why delivery isn't the finish line - The 3-second window after every retrieve that either resets rhythm or quietly erodes steadiness for the next one.
✓ The micro-adjustments that compound into steadier work, cleaner lines, and dogs that stay with you when challenges build.
WHO THIS WEBINAR IS FOR
Whether you're running your first hunt test, stuck at a training plateau, or refining work at the all age level, these patterns show up everywhere. If you've ever felt like your dog "just isn't getting it" despite solid fundamentals, this session will show you what you're not seeing.
Meet Your Mentor, Pat Burns
Hi there — I'm Pat Burns.
It all started in 1984 at Handjem Kennels, training alongside Mike Lardy. That foundation shaped my career and set me on a path that’s spanned decades of training, competing, and—most importantly—mentoring others.
In 1986, I co-founded Esprit Kennels, where I worked with countless talented dogs and handlers. Then in 2007, I returned to Handjem, continuing to refine my craft and help others do the same.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to contribute to the success of more than 100 Field Trial Champions and over 50 National Finalists, including five National Champions.
But more than the titles, what drives me is helping trainers truly understand their dogs—and themselves.
I’ve spent my career guiding handlers through the nuances of this game. It’s never just about setups or mechanics. It’s about clarity, connection, and knowing what needs to happen—and why.
I owe a great deal to two key mentors in my life: Rex Carr, who gave me my start and shaped how I think about excellence, and Mike Lardy, who taught me that great training is built on thoughtful problem-solving, not just repetition.
That’s what we’re doing inside Retriever Revolution. And if you’re ready to train with more purpose, I’d be honored to walk that path with you.
What You’ll Start Seeing Differently
- The Pattern Recognition Framework: A simple mental checklist to diagnose where timing broke down before, during, or after the retrieve
- The Pre-Bird Setup Protocol: Exact behaviors to look for (and wait for) before sending your dog
- The Importance Of Delivery Mechanics: Why delivery isn't the end. it's the reset
- Live Q&A: Your specific training challenges answered in real time
Plus: All registered attendees get the replay link and a downloadable checklist you can reference in the field.
WHAT HANDLERS ARE SAYING
"I've been training for 6 years and thought I had timing down. Pat showed me I was consistently late on my corrections by about 4 seconds. No wonder my dog looked confused. Fixed it in two sessions."
— Jeff S
"This isn't another 'here's the basics' webinar. Pat sees things other trainers miss."
— Laura P

HERE'S THE THING
Most handlers don't miss one big thing.
They miss small ones:
A rushed setup.
A flicker of distraction.
A transition that never resets the rhythm.
By the time it feels off, it's already unraveling.
This session helps you spot those moments earlier while you still have time to shape the outcome.
Small details. Big difference.
